Polypropylene anti-corrosion tape is becoming increasingly popular. So what are the advantages of polyethylene anti-corrosion tape? And how does it compare to other anti-corrosion products? Let’s take a look at the benefits of polypropylene anti-corrosion tape.
I. Excellent corrosion resistance
1. Polypropylene and butyl rubber inherently possess excellent water resistance and antioxidant properties;
2. The polypropylene anti-corrosion tape exhibits sufficient adhesion to steel pipes (20–30 N/cm), effectively preventing water from penetrating the pipe surface. Even after years of on-site wrapping and backfilling, it maintains a high level of bonding strength.
3. Polypropylene anti-corrosion tape exhibits excellent elongation. It can maintain both its elongation and flexibility over a wide temperature range. Typical measured elongation values range from 150% to 400%. Polyethylene adhesive tape can be wound at −34°C and used continuously at −40°C, with a embrittlement temperature of −7°C, whereas petroleum asphalt has an embrittlement temperature of −5°C.
4. The plastic tape possesses sufficient strength to withstand mechanical handling during pipeline loading and unloading, as well as the soil stresses encountered after burial. Its smooth surface ensures that, upon compaction, neither the pipe nor the coating will delaminate or detach when the pipe and surrounding soil undergo relative displacement.
5. The polypropylene anti-corrosion tape’s protective coating exhibits excellent cathodic disbondment resistance. This indicates that most tape‑wrapped pipelines maintain a reliable protection potential and a stable protection current, with good adaptability to cathodic protection currents.
6. Polypropylene anti-corrosion tape exhibits high electrical insulation and low moisture absorption. Its coating has a resistivity of 10¹² Ω·m or greater, with a moisture absorption rate of less than 0.02%. Its dielectric strength is 40 kV/mm, twice that of asphalt; the water absorption of coal‑tar enamel is twice that of the tape, while petroleum asphalt absorbs six times as much water as the adhesive tape.
Performance characteristics of polypropylene anti-corrosion tape:
1) Polypropylene anti-corrosion tape exhibits excellent chemical and physical stability.
2) The adhesion strength to steel pipe is 20–30 N/m, effectively preventing moisture ingress.
3) Excellent ductility and flexibility. It remains pliable even at –40°C and does not crack under bending or impact, enabling construction in extremely cold conditions. Its embrittlement temperature is –70°C, whereas materials such as petroleum asphalt embrittle at around –5°C.
4) It has high mechanical strength and can withstand certain mechanical damage and soil stresses.
5) Exhibits excellent cathodic disbondment resistance and is compatible with cathodic protection.
6) It exhibits high electrical insulation and low moisture absorption, with a volume resistivity exceeding 10¹² Ω·m and a moisture absorption rate of only 0.01; by contrast, petroleum asphalt has a moisture absorption rate six times that of polyethylene anti-corrosion tape.
7) The construction process is simple, easy to operate, widely applicable, and allows for intuitive quality control.
