When using polypropylene anti-corrosion tape, thorough preparatory work is essential before application. In addition to the materials and tools required, you must also ensure that environmental conditions—such as weather and temperature—are suitable. Weather can affect the performance of the product during installation, so it’s important to know how to handle such situations. Below, let’s explore the necessary preparations for applying polypropylene anti-corrosion tape under different environmental conditions.
When using polypropylene anti-corrosion tape, thorough preparatory work is essential before application. In addition to the materials and tools required, you should also ensure that environmental conditions—such as weather and temperature—are properly managed. Weather can affect the performance of the product during installation, so it’s important to know how to handle such situations. Below, let’s explore the necessary preparations for applying polypropylene anti-corrosion tape in various environments.

1. Ambient temperature: At lower temperatures, both initial adhesion and long-term bonding strength will decrease. If the ambient temperature cannot be raised, you can increase the adhesive’s temperature—either by heating the coating solution or using infrared heating—to elevate the surface temperature of the substrate and the tape itself, thereby enhancing bond strength.
2. Ambient humidity: At higher humidity levels, the bonding speed decreases, but the bond strength increases. Conversely, at lower humidity, the initial bond strength is greater; therefore, during application, it is essential to control the amount of water applied to maintain optimal humidity conditions.
3. Coating water temperature: The higher the coating water temperature, the stronger the initial adhesion; however, after a certain period, the adhesive strength of the polypropylene anti-corrosion tape will decline. Typically, room-temperature water is used, and hot water should be avoided in winter to prevent adverse effects on bonding performance.
4. When addressing the adhesion of polypropylene anti-corrosion tape, it is essential to consider overall conditions and environmental factors during application and installation.
Unopened polypropylene anti-corrosion tape typically comes with a separator. This separator primarily serves to keep the tape layers apart, providing excellent protection when the tape is not in use. So, how should you break this separator when you’re ready to apply the tape?
1. Before starting construction with polypropylene anti-corrosion tape, do not remove the entire release liner. The liner may be peeled off gradually as the tape is applied.
2. In general, the initial circumferential wrap should be applied perpendicularly, and after completing the helical wrapping, subsequent anti-corrosion tapes must also be applied perpendicularly.
3. In addition, when removing the release liner from the adhesive tape, care must be taken to avoid contaminating the substrate surface and ensuring that the substrate surface remains free of any foreign particles.
4. The surface preparation of the polypropylene anti-corrosion tape substrate involves removing rust, welding slag, and burrs, ensuring that the surface is clean, dry, and free of oil and contaminants. Typically, manual rust removal should achieve a St3 rating, while mechanical rust removal should meet a Sa2 rating.
5. When applying the primer, use a dedicated primer and, while keeping it away from the flame, apply it evenly with a clean brush or roller. The typical application rate is approximately 12 L per unit area.
6. Wrap only after the primer surface has dried for approximately 5–10 minutes.
We should make certain preparations and adopt some useful techniques to address varying environmental conditions, such as temperature and humidity. It’s important to keep learning in these areas. Remember the points mentioned above—this will help ensure that our construction work delivers increasingly better results.
